Hou Yu, Beijing Opera
Yu Hou is a cultural ambassador of Fosun Foundation, a world-class actor of the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing, and an inheritor of the Chinese Peking Opera genre. She received her MFA from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in 2009, attended the Chinese School of Inheritance’s workshop in 2010, majored in brush painting at the Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts in 2014, and graduated from The 6th Youth Graduate Class of the Chinese Academy of Opera in 2017. Born in a long line of Liyuan disciples, Hou studied Peking Opera from the young age of three and entered the Peking Opera Art School at the age of seven. After graduating from the university in 2006, she joined the youth troupe of the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing and is now a leader of outstanding young talents at the theatre. In 2009, she studied with famous Peking Opera artists Mingyan Li and Baoxiu Zhao and was also mentored by artist Ziru Zheng for many years. Her other mentors include Zhenquan Sun, Jingai Zhao, Yawen Lin,
Lan Zhang, Liping Li, and Ziping Wang. She frequently performs in plays, such as The Golden Turtle, Meet the Empress and Fight the Dragon Robes, The Tattoos of Yue’s Mother, The Banquet, Eight Treasure Tonic, The Red Lantern, Li Kui Visits His Mother, Yang’s Heroine, and The Pair of Flower Guns. Hou placed first in the professional category of the 4th Beijing Jingkun Competition in 2001, won the gold medal at the 4th National Opera Red Plum in 2009, and won the “Ringmaster” silver medal at the 7th CCTV Youth Peking Opera Grand Prix in 2012. Her other accolades include the Grand Prize at the 2016 Autumn Tsinghua Academy of Arts for the creation of a Chinese painting, a Certificate of Honor at the 2017 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, and the 2019 Shanghai Magnolia Award.
Beijing opera is one of the most influential opera genres in China. It is known as the "national opera," concentrated in Beijing and distributed nationwide. Named by Lanfang Mei, the Peking Opera performance system represents the Eastern theater performance system as a whole and is regarded as one of the three major performance systems in the world. Peking opera is an essential expression of traditional Chinese culture, and many of its artistic elements are used as symbols of traditional Chinese culture. Peking Opera features four main role types: Sheng (gentlemen), Dan (women), Jing (rough men or villains), and Chou (clown). Each role has a distinctive set of performance forms as well as unique acting and singing techniques. The repertoire of Peking Opera includes over 1,300 traditional plays, with more than 300 or 400 plays being performed regularly — most of which consist of tellings of historical stories and folklore. In May 2006, the State Council approved the inclusion of Peking Opera in the first cohort of the national intangible cultural heritage list. In 2010, it was added to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
